Alajuelense
Ruiz made his professional debut for Liga Deportiva Alajuelense on November 30, 2003, against Municipal Pérez Zeledón, in Costa Rica’s top division. He created a trio with two attackers, Rolando Fonseca and Froylán Ledezma, and established himself as a goalscorer and playmaker.
Ruiz scored his debut goal against Ramonense on December 23, 2003, scoring twice against Fernando Patterson. For his facial feature, he was dubbed La Comadreja (The Weasel) in Alajuelense. He was a member of the squad that won regional titles like the UNCAF Cup and the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.
Gent
Ruiz signed a four-year contract with Gent in the summer of 2006, together with Randall Azofeifa from Deportivo Saprissa and Roy Myrie from Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
On December 8, 2007, he scored his maiden hat-trick against Lokeren. He was the captain and top scorer for the squad in the Belgian League that season.

The Dutch club FC Twente announced on July 15, 2009, that they had signed Ruiz for a sum of roughly €5 million and committed to get a portion of any subsequent transfer.
He agreed to a four-year contract with the Eredivisie club. On December 12, 2009, he scored for the eleventh time in 10 matches against NAC Breda.
Ruiz scored three goals in the 46th, 49th, and 50th minutes in a hat-trick against Sparta on March 27, 2010. FC Twente won the Eredivisie for the first time in their history on May 2, 2010, with a 2-0 victory over NAC Breda; Ruiz scored the game’s opening goal in the 23rd minute.
