Ashraf Ghani Early Life
Ghani was born and bred in Afghanistan, where he also studied. Despite this, he enrolled at Lake Oswego High School in the United States, where he graduated, after being offered the opportunity to engage in a foreign exchange project. He decided to study cultural anthropology at the American University of Beirut, where he graduated in 1973 with a major in the subject.

Ghani began his academic career on the faculties of Kabul University and Aarhus University in Denmark. In 1983, he became a faculty of the University of California. Following that, he began the long collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, where he worked until 1991. Ghani subsequently went to work for the World Bank, where he was in responsibility of projects in East and South Asia.
Ghani returned to Afghanistan in 2002 as the top advisor to President Hamid Karzai after working for the World Bank and the United Nations for two decades. Ghani is also the co-founder, with Clare Lockhart, of the Institute for State Effectiveness, which has worked on developing a framework for post-conflict transitions, taking into consideration the situation in Afghanistan at the time.
