Life of Ashley Young
Young was born in the Hertfordshire town of Stevenage. He has one elder brother and two football-playing younger brothers, Lewis, who made his Watford debut in 2008, and Kyle, who was training at the Arsenal Academy in April 2009. Young went to Stevenage’s The John Henry Newman School and played school football with Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, who was in the same year.
Young’s Jamaican-born father is a Tottenham Hotspur fan, whereas Young, like his older brother, is an Arsenal fan. Ian Wright was his inspiration and “role model on and off the field.” Since June 2015, Young has been married to Nicky Pike. They had planned a wedding in 2011, but it was cancelled two days before.
Young has played in a number of positions, primarily as a winger, but also as a forward – under Boothroyd at Watford and once under Van Gaal at Manchester United – and in a free role behind the striker at Aston Villa. Young was reinvented as a defender in his final years at United, playing as a left-sided full-back or wing-back.
According to WhoScored’s Martin Laurence, “Luke Shaw can’t get a kick at Manchester United, and that’s down to the form of Ashley Young, who has adapted to another new role excellently.” On present form, the 32-year-old should be regarded England’s first choice rather than merely making the cut.”
Young was played as a right-back in a 3-0 Champions League win against Basel on September 12, 2017, contributing with the opening goal with a cross to Marouane Fellaini in the 35th minute. Young was also captain for the match. Young has courted controversy, having been accused of diving by the press and having discussed diving to gain an unfair edge with previous managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

Club Career
Early Career
Young joined the Watford youth system when he was ten years old. He grew up there until the summer of 2001, when he was notified by the club that he would not be receiving a full scholarship and would have to search for another team. Despite being turned down, Young remained with the club on a part-time basis, working hard to develop his game and establish he belonged in the first squad.
Despite being 16, he began training with the Under-18s and was starting games before the conclusion of the season. He advanced to the Under-21s before being handed a professional contract by the club. Ray Lewington gave the 18-year-old his first-team debut in September 2003, when he scored as a substitute against Millwall.
That season, he made five substitute appearances, scoring three goals, and got his first start for the club in the League Cup. Young rose to prominence during the 2004-05 season, appearing in 34 of Watford’s league games as they battled for survival in the Championship.
Despite failing to score, his efforts this season earned him the club’s Young Player of the Season honour. Young was given a fresh lease of life as a striker and right winger under Aidy Boothroyd in the 2005-06 season.
Watford
Ashley Young appeared in 41 League matches, scoring 15 goals. It includes a playoff semi-final goal against Crystal Palace. As Watford qualified for the play-offs and subsequently defeated Leeds United 3-0 to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Young scored a number of remarkable goals that season, including free-kicks against Plymouth Argyle and Leeds, a 30-yard strike into the top corner against Coventry City, and a curling shot against Queens Park Rangers. He was sent off for the first time in his career during this season, in a local derby away at Luton Town.
He started Watford’s Premier League season brightly, scoring three times in the league, including a last-minute strike in a 3-3 draw with Fulham (he also scored Watford’s second goal in the match) and a goal against Middlesbrough in October, in Watford’s first win of the season. In the League Cup, he also scored a free kick in a 2-1 home win over Hull City.
Three unknown teams made £5 million bids for the under-21 international during the January 2007 transfer window.
Watford turned down these attempts, as well as a £7 million bid from an unknown club. West Ham United accepted an upgraded bid of over £10 million. Young, though, turned down the offer, preferring to wait for offers from teams where relegation was not a concern.

Aston Villa
2007-2008
Young was signed by Aston Villa for a cost of £8 million (increasing to £9.65 million with add-ons) on January 23, 2007. This was the largest amount Aston Villa had ever paid for a player at the time. On 31 January 2007, he made his debut for Villa against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, however Villa lost 3-1. Young had a strong start to the 2007-08 season, winning multiple Man of the Match accolades and earning a call-up to the England team.
He was second in assists to Cesc Fàbregas in the 2007-08 Premier League season, with 17. Ashley Young was named to the Premier League Team of the Year, and along from Portsmouth’s David James, he was the only player who did not come from one of the ‘Big Four’ (Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United).
Young scored two goals and assisted two more for Aston Villa against Birmingham City at Villa Park on April 20, 2008, and Villa won 5-1. He also scored the game-winning goal against Odense Boldklub of Denmark in Villa’s home leg of the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round.
Young was named Premier League Player of the Month on October 10, 2008. This was due to his performance in the Premier League during the 2008-09 season.
2008-2009
Young joins the group of players who have won the award more than once, which includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard. Young scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Everton on December 7, 2008, one of which was an injury time winner after Everton’s Joleon Lescott, a lifelong Villa supporter, had equalised seconds before. In the post-match news conference, manager Martin O’Neill praised the player as “world-class.”
On November 4, 2008, Young signed a new four-year contract extension through 2012. On 10 January 2009, Young was named Premier League Player of the Month for December, with O’Neill, who was named Manager of the Month. He became the first player in Premier League history to win three Player of the Month honours in the same season.
Young was sent off in a match against Sunderland on January 18, 2009, for a two-footed tackle on Sunderland’s Dean Whitehead. On April 26, 2009, he was named PFA Young Player of the Year.
2009-2011
Young converted a penalty as Aston Villa defeated Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield on August 24, 2009. He did, however, miss a penalty three days later in a UEFA Europa League home encounter against Rapid Wien. Ashley Young won two penalties in the first half (one of which he missed and the other of which James Milner converted) as Aston Villa were ousted from the competition on the away goals rule.
Young was named vice-captain of the team for the 2010-11 season and played in a new free role behind the striker, allowing him to move from flank to side and through the centre. On September 18, 2010, Young scored his first goal of the 2010-11 season with a straight free-kick in a Premier League match at home against Bolton Wanderers.
He finished the season with nine goals and fourteen assists in 39 games in all competitions for Villa.
Young claimed that he would not make a decision on his future until the end of the season, despite having one year remaining on his present deal. On June 20, 2011, new Villa manager Alex McLeish stated, “It’s not definite yet, but it does appear plausible.”

Manchester United
2011-2014
Young signed for Manchester United on June 23, 2011, for an unknown amount, allegedly approximately £17 million, after passing a medical the day before, beating Liverpool to the deal. He agreed to a five-year contract with the club. He was given the number 18 shirt that Paul Scholes had previously worn.
In the 2011 FA Community Shield, he made his United debut in a 3-2 derby triumph against Manchester City, playing the whole 90 minutes and providing an assist. On 14 August 2011, he made his league debut for United against West Bromwich Albion, setting up Wayne Rooney’s first goal and causing an own goal following a run down the left flank and cross in a 2-1 away win.
On August 28, he scored his first two goals for United in an 8-2 triumph over Arsenal at Old Trafford. Both occurred following a cut inside from the left flank and two right foot shots into the far corner. Young made his UEFA Champions League debut on September 27, 2011, scoring a headed goal in the 90th minute to help Manchester United draw 3-3 with Basel.
Young made his long-awaited comeback to the field on February 5, 2012, in a 3-3 Premier League tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
On February 16, he scored the first goal in a 2-0 Europa League away win over Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena. Young scored two goals and assisted another in a 3-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on March 4, 2012. He scored in a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on April 2.
2014-2015
Young began his first competitive game as a wing-back in Louis van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation against Swansea City on August 16, 2014, after playing the position in pre-season. On January 1, 2015, he suffered a hamstring injury in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City. Young made his comeback on 3 February in a 3-0 win against Cambridge United, replacing Marcos Rojo in the 81st minute. Young scored his first goal of the season in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on March 4.
He was named Man of the Match again after earning a penalty that Juan Mata converted and assisting Marouane Fellaini’s header in United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on May 9. Young assisted again in the following match on 17 May, this time for Ander Herrera’s volley against Arsenal, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
Under Van Gaal, Young spent the season playing both on the wing and at wing-back, with the latter being his preferred position. Ashley Young signed a new three-year deal with Manchester United on August 7, 2015, keeping him at the club until June 2018, with the option to extend for another year.
Young’s early season appearances were limited, with only one start in United’s first seven Premier League games, a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on August 8, 2015. Young scored his first goal for United in a 3-1 victory against rivals Liverpool on September 12th, after playing through debutant Anthony Martial.
Young returned to the starting lineup at left-back against Arsenal on October 4, resulting in a 3-0 loss. He began at right-back against West Brom on 7 November, which resulted in a 2-0 win for United; this was a position he regularly played owing to Antonio Valencia’s injuries during November, December, and January.
2016-2017
Young helped Anthony Martial with a cross into the box to open the score against Swansea City on January 2, 2016, with United winning 2-1. Young suffered a ‘severe groin injury’ against Liverpool on January 17, putting him out for several months. On 10 April, he made his comeback against Tottenham Hotspur, replacing Marcus Rashford at halftime and playing forward in a 3-0 loss.
Van Gaal faced harsh criticism for his choice to play Young as a striker, but the Dutchman justified his conduct by claiming that he “wanted more running in behind.” On May 21, he won the FA Cup by defeating Crystal Palace 2-1 in extra time, playing as both striker and left-back after replacing Marcus Rashford in the 72nd minute – his third domestic title with the club.
Ashley Young made his debut in the EFL Cup against Northampton Town on September 21st, playing on the flank in a 3-1 victory. Young came in as a substitute in the next two games, against Leicester City in a 4-1 league win on September 24 and against Zorya Luhansk in a 1-0 Europa League win on September 29.
Young only had four appearances from October to January, all of which were starts at wing-back or full-back. On 19 February 2017, he played the entire 90 minutes in a 2-1 away win against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. Young began to play much more frequently after this game, appearing frequently in March and April.
Young led Manchester United for the first time in a 2-0 win over Chelsea on April 16. His season was cut short after sustaining an injury against Celta Vigo in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on 4 May, after replacing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 78th minute.
2017-2020
Young made his first start of the season at right-back against Basel in the Champions League on September 12, 2017, assisting on the opening goal with a cross to Marouane Fellaini in the 35th minute. He was also captain for the match. His performance earned him a starting spot at left-back in United’s 4-0 win over Everton on September 17.
Young scored a brace for the first time since March 2012 against his previous side Watford on November 28, scoring the opening two goals, one of which was a 30-yard freekick into the top left corner, in a 4-2 triumph at Vicarage Road. Young extended his contract with Manchester United until 2020 in February 2019.
In August 2019, he became United’s club captain. Young scored the first goal of his Manchester United career on December 12, 2019, in a 4-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League group stages.
Inter Milan
Young agreed to terms with Inter Milan for the balance of the 2019-20 season on January 17, 2020, with the option to extend for another season. According to reports, the transfer cost was roughly €1.5 million (£1.28 million). He was one of three former Premier League players to join Inter Milan in the same transfer window, with Victor Moses and Christian Eriksen. Young assisted Lautaro Martnez in a 1-1 draw against Cagliari in his debut game for the club. On February 16, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 loss against Lazio.
Inter won the Serie A in 2020-21. Young was just the third Englishman to win the Italian league title, following Jimmy Greaves in 1962 and Gerry Hitchens in 1963, both with the Nerazzurri.
