Aruna Irani started her film journey by appearing in the movie Gunga Jumna in 1961 when she was just nine years old. In her first role, she played a young version of Vyjayanthimala’s character. In the beginning, Aruna took smaller roles in films like Jahanara (1964), Farz (1967), Upkar (1967), and Aaya Sawan Jhoomke (1969). She also acted alongside comedian Mehmood in movies like Aulad (1968), Humjoli (1970), and Naya Zamana (1971).
Her breakthrough came with the movie Caravan (1971), where she played a bold gypsy woman. This role made her very popular. However, during this time, her relationship with Mehmood became more important than her career. This affected her chances of getting lead roles.
