Club Career
Ismaily and Sheffield United
Fathy played right defense and midfield for Ismaily in Egypt, where he won the Egyptian Premier League in 2001-2002. In the early months of 2007, the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram stated that Fathy’s club had accepted Sheffield United’s £700,000 bid for the player.
On January 24, 2007, Fathy finally agreed to a three-and-a-half-year deal. While playing for the Blades, Fathy made his Premier League debut for Manchester United as a substitute in the last minutes of a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane on February 10, 2007, and his complete first team debut against Liverpool at Anfield on February 24.
Al Ahly
After talks with Sheffield United’s management, Fathy was rumoured to be moving to the Egyptian club El Zamalek for 2 million euros, but the player rejected the transfer even though the teams had agreed on a fee. Fathy insisted he wanted to continue his professional playing career outside of Egypt.
However, Fathy’s relocation and Sheffield United’s assent to a transaction were made possible by El Zamalek’s Egyptian rivals Al Ahly. After spending eight months at United and only making three senior appearances, Fathy signed for El-Ahly on September 10 for a cost of £675,000.
However, Fathy was signed after the Egyptian transfer window had closed, and as Al-Ahly couldn’t register him to play until the following January, they opted to loan Fathy out of the country to help him get back into match shape.
Fathy played frequently for the first squad at Kazma in Kuwait while on loan from Al Ahly, where he scored four goals while playing for the team regularly. On March 10, 2008, Fathy made his Al Ahly debut against Arab Contractors in a road match. He later established himself as Hossam Ashour’s backup in center midfield for Ahly.

Pyramids FC
Following Al Ahly’s inability to secure a contract renewal with the 35-year-old defender, Pyramids FC announced on April 11th, 2020, that Fathy would be joining their team at the conclusion of the season on a free transfer.
After losing another squad star, Abdallah El Said, to Pyramids, Al Ahly supporters had mixed sentiments about Fathy’s relocation.
International Career
When Fathy played for Egypt against South Africa in 2001 at the age of 17, he became the nation’s youngest-ever international. Even before playing for his club’s main team, Ismaily SC, although this came shortly after, Fathi was chosen for the national team by Egyptian Coach Mohsen Saleh.
He was then called up for the Egyptian junior squad. In addition to representing Egypt in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2003, Fathy was a member of the Egyptian young team that won the African Youth Cup in Burkina Faso that year. At one point, Fathi was a member of Egypt’s U-20, U-23, and senior squads at the same time.
Fathy was also a member of the Egypt team that defeated Ivory Coast on penalties to win the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations at the Cairo International Stadium.
Fathy was selected for the tournament team and was recognized as the fair player of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. In May 2018, he was included in Egypt’s team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The game versus Russia ended with him scoring his own goal.
